Immediate vs. Conventional Dentures: Which Is Right for You?
If you’re facing extractions, you have two main paths to a new smile: immediate dentures placed the same day, or conventional dentures made after your gums heal. Both are good options, they just suit different priorities.
Immediate dentures
These are made in advance and placed the same day your teeth are removed, so you’re never seen without teeth. They also protect the healing tissue. Because your gums change shape as they heal, immediate dentures usually need a reline later on to keep the fit snug.
Conventional dentures
These are made after your gums have healed, typically several weeks after extractions. The upside is a very precise initial fit; the trade-off is a short period without teeth during healing.
How to choose
- Choose immediate dentures if you don’t want to be without teeth at any point.
- Choose conventional dentures if you prefer the most precise first fit and don’t mind waiting.
